COS baseball coach wins 500th game

Jody Allen is 500-351-3 in 20 seasons as College of the Sequoias baseball coach.

The combined six-hit shutout pitched by Erick McRae and two relievers in College of the Sequoias’ 2-0 victory over Modesto in a single-elimination play-in game Tuesday did more than just extend the Giants’ run in the Northern California regional baseball playoffs — it also gave coach Jody Allen a milestone win.

Allen, already the school’s winningest coach, improved to 500-351-3 in his 20 seasons at Sequoias. Allen is a former Hoover High, Kings River Community College and Fresno State player who has led the Giants to 11 playoff appearances and five top-20 finishes since replacing Al Branco as coach in 1994.

The Giants (20-17) advance to a best-of-3 series at No. 2-seeded Sierra starting Friday. Fourth-seeded Fresno City is hosting No. 13 Laney.
